Gauri Pathare, a well-known name in the Hindustani Classical Music, is set to perform in Auckland this month.
Migrant Heritage Charitable Trust (MigHT-I) is bringing Gauri Pathare to our shores for an evening of classical music–Chaitra Gauri, in Auckland on Saturday, April 28.
Over the past several years, she has emerged as a singer of great promise. Endowed with a powerful and well-trained voice, she sings with confidence and verve and impresses the listeners with her formidable taiyari.
Gauri Pathare is a name to reckon with amongst the present generation of Indian classical music. She initially trained under the guidance of Pt. Gangadharbuwa Pimpalkhare of Kirana gharana. She has skilfully picked the nuances of the three gharanas, viz. Jaipur, Gwalior and Kirana.
She learnt the intricacies of ragavidya from Jitendra Abhisheki and Padma Talwalkar. A glittering gem in the crown of Indian classical music. Gauri’s interest in Hindustani classical vocal music was aroused by listening to her mother Dr Vidya Damle, a disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki.
Since 2010, she had been learning from Arun Dravid, a disciple of Mogubai Kurdikar and Kishori Amonkar, the jod or compound ragas that are considered the signature ragas of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. This was made possible by the Mani Mann fellowship instituted under Sanskriti Pratishthan by music lover Mani Mann for young musicians in the age group of 25 to 40.
Recently, at the conclusion of her fellowship, Gauri gave a scintillating vocal recital at the India International Centre auditorium in New Delhi in front of an audience that included well-known musicians such as Shanno Khurana and Madhup Mudgal.
Her voice is her forte– she was trained in various voice culture techniques by Ustaad Syeeduddin Daagar (noted dhrupad dhamar gaayak).
Her various accolades include being awarded the prestigious Smt Kesarbai Kerkar scholarship conferred by the NCPA in 2000-2001. Gauri received the Surmani Puraskar in 2006 and the Pt. Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze Yuwa Gayak Puraskar in 2007, amongst many others awards.
The most coveted Swara-Bhaskar Puraskaar instituted in the memory of late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi for the year 2012-13 was awarded to Gauri. She was also conferred the equally prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla "Kala Kiran Puraskar" for the year 2013.
Gauri holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Pune and a Diploma in IT from NIIT. She has performed at most of the prestigious classical music festivals in India including Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, Tansen Festival, Chandigadh Sangeet Sammelan, Kesarbai Kerkar Sammelan, Pt. Kumar Gandharva Sangeet Sammelan etc.
She has frequently performed at UK, France, Switzerland, USA, Australia, Canada, Dubai, Singapore among other countries. Universal records, Mystica Music Co. and several other music companies have released Gauri's audio CDs and her album 'Tribute' was nominated for GIMA awards.
During her early years, in addition to numerous inter-collegiate, inter-university and inter-state trophies, Gauri also won the All India Radio competition. Gauri was the vocal accompaniment to Pt. Suresh Talwalkar for his taal maala concerts in her initial years.
Retaining emotional quotient of each raag while blending the singing is what Gauri believes in.
The upcoming show Chaitra Gauri is featuring this talented artist, accompanied by Auckland’s renowned Tabla player Manjit Singh (a Punjab gharana proponent and a teacher in his own right) and Samir Bhalodkar, son of the late Samvadini maestro Jayant Bhalodkar on Samvadini. This show is a chance to hear some classical music of highest standard.
