A member of the public was also hit by a vehicle after police performed a routine traffic stop at around 10.30am on Reynella Drive in Massey.

The offender has fled the scene in a vehicle and police say they have a large presence actively searching for the offender.

St John Ambulance says three patients have been taken from the scene to hospital, and one of them is in a critical condition.

One other person is in a serious condition and one has moderate injuries.

A spokesperson said all three patients have been taken to the same hospital and would not comment whether the person in a critical condition was a police officer.

Jordan Lamanuvae, who lives on the street, is waiting at the cordon to get his son out of a kindergarten that is in lockdown.

He said the news police officers had been shot came as a shock as it was a lovely, quiet area.

Residents in West Auckland suburb where police officers have been shot are being advised to stay inside.

An eagle helicopter is now circling the area as the police try to find the offender - who fled in a vehicle.

Four police cars with armed officers are guarding one end of the street - advising concerned residents to stay at home.
One man who lives nearby says he asked one of the armed officers if he was safe on the street and he was told to go home.

Meanwhile, Auckland Transport has added further details to its statement asking residents not to travel around Massey, due to a police incident.

It now echoes police in asking people to stay clear of the area around Don Buck Rd, Waimumu Rd, Hewlitt Rd and Triangle Rd following a serious police incident.

TVNZ is reporting that one police officer has died after being shot.

It says 1 NEWS understands one of the officers has died.

Two police officers have been shot and someone has been hit by a car during an unfolding incident in West Auckland this morning.

Police performed a routine traffic stop in the suburb of Massey about half past 10 this morning.

Shots were fired at officers, two of whom were seriously injured.

A member of the public was also hit by a car before the offender fled the scene.

Schools in the area, including Massey High School, Don Buck Primary School and Don Buck Kindergarten are in lockdown.

A West Harbour resident has told RNZ she has can hear police sirens and a helicopter in the area.

Auckland Transport is warning of major disruptions to travel in the area.
