After years of insurance limbo, and operating from temporary premises, Gurudwara Singh Sabha Christchurch, which is managed by the New Zealand Sikh Society, South Island (Inc.), finally got a new home last Saturday.
Visibly happy and all praise for the efforts of everyone involved in “finally making this happen”, Harjit Singh, one of the ten trustees of the Society said, “After our original building was destroyed in the 2010/2011 earthquakes, we have looked at various options. In the meantime, we have operated from the temporary premises of Landsdowne Terrace.
Meanwhile, the Society has made extensive plans to renovate the newest Gurudwara in Christchurch over the next one year. “We will put in carpets, domes, and modernise the kitchen a bit. The living quarters at the back of the Gurudwara, which will host those managing the day-to-day affairs, will be bettered too.” Mr Singh also shared his Society’s plan to organise weekly Punjabi classes for children within the Gurudwara premises very soon.
In the meantime, devotees and the wider community in Christchurch can participate in the daily Sri Sukhmani Sahib Path and kirtans; as well as langars, which would be organised every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
